Fiona McFarlane bekommt den renommierten, mit £ 30.000 dotierten Preis für ihren Erzählband »The High Places«.

Fiona McFarlane, The High Places

THE HIGH PLACES is a collection of fourteen scintillating short stories: surprising, wise, thought-provoking, and superbly wrought. Ranging in setting from Australia to Greece, England to a Pacific Island, they focus on people: their hopes, fears, dreams and disappointments, and their relationships. All zoom in on life's unknowable points, strange moments around which fortune turns, making superb use of ambiguity and foible.  In "Mycenae," McFarlance describes a middle-aged couple's disastrous vacation with old friends. In "Good News for Modern Man," a scientist lives on a small island with only a colossal squid and the ghost of Charles Darwin for company. And in the title story, and Australian farmer turns to Old Testament methods to relieve a fatal drought. The collection dissects the feelings - longing, contempt, love, fear - that animate our existence and hints at a reality beyond the smallness of our lives.

Fiona McFarlane was born in 1978 in Sydney, Australia, and holds degrees in English from Sydney University and Cambridge University, as well as an M.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a Michener Fellow. Her novel, THE NIGHT GUEST, was published by FSG in 2013, and her short fiction has been published in The New Yorker, Zoetrope: All-Story, The Missouri Review, and The Best Australian Stories. She lives in Sydney.

Fiona's mesmerizing debut novel, THE NIGHT GUEST, sold in eighteen territories, earned incredible review coverage, and received blurbs from Kate Atkinson, Kevin Powers, and Susanna Moore and many more (see below). Her first short story collection, THE HIGH PLACES is further evidence of McFarlane's preternatural talent.

THE HIGH PLACES erscheint bei Penguin Australia, Farrar Straus & Giroux (USA) und Hodder & Stoughton (GB).
